Academic Intervention Services (AIS) Coordinator

My name is Shirley Fernandez, and I am currently an AIS Coordinator (Academic Intervention Services) in District 75. My primary role is to provide reading intervention and support for schools. Also, I provide support to teaching teams to help them implement various literacy and intervention programs. Another crucial aspect of my role is analyzing the need for research-based intervention and diagnostic assessments for at-risk readers. Also, I advocate the effectiveness of utilizing the guidance of: Science of Reading, NYC Reads, MTSS Framework (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support), universal screeners, tracking, and interpreting literacy data.

In my previous position, I worked as a Special Education Teacher with grades K-6 for over 10 years. I taught literacy and core subjects to a diverse population of students. In this capacity, I worked with the Alternate Assessment Program managing and writing IEPs, administering SANDI/FAST, and other universal screeners. In addition, I advocated for my students to receive targeted intervention, explicit instructions, and differentiated learning to improve. Also, I worked with Early Childhood Education Programs at CBO schools. My role encompassed: implementing early intervention, creative play, and language development.

I am constantly developing my pedagogical skills by implementing best teaching practices in literacy, and advocating for student improvement. In this connection, I am eager to expand my knowledge in the pursuit of fostering further developmental programs to benefit my peers, students, and the education community. I am privileged to serve as part of the D75 evolving and supportive community.

On a personal note, I enjoy traveling, fine dining, and fashion.
